Ostrava Christmas Markets 2026 on Masaryk Square and in the South

Ostrava's Christmas markets run on Masaryk Square downtown and in Ostrava-Jih, at Bělský les and by the Hrabůvka Polyclinic. Here are the announced dates, opening hours and a tip for pairing Advent with a city game.

Ostrava concentrates its Christmas markets downtown every year: the main stage stands on Masarykovo náměstí (Masaryk Square), lit up by a live Christmas tree. Ostravské Vánoce (Ostrava Christmas) downtown traditionally runs until January 1. This year the Ostrava-Jih (Ostrava South) district has announced its own Advent too, with the Christmas Village in Bělský les (Bělský Forest) and the Christmas Square by the Hrabůvka Polyclinic. Below you’ll find the venues, the announced dates and a tip for pairing the markets with a city game.

Ostrava’s Christmas Map

Christmas in Ostrava has a busy downtown and a quieter south, and each of them suits a different day.

The overview below puts the organizers’ announced details side by side, so you can plan your route without switching between websites.

Admission to the markets in Ostrava-Jih is free, and you can support a selected charity with a voluntary donation on site.

The downtown program changes from year to year. Check this year’s concert schedule and stage times in the City of Ostrava events calendar before you go.

  • Masaryk Square: the main stage, a live Christmas tree and the festive lighting ceremony that traditionally opens the event.
  • Náměstí Dr. Edvarda Beneše (Dr. Edvard Beneš Square): this is where the Christmas ice rink goes up; opening hours and ice resurfacing times are posted on the rink’s website.
  • Christmas Village in Bělský les: open from November 15, 2026 to January 6, 2027, daily from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., except December 24, December 31 and January 1.
  • Christmas Square by the Hrabůvka Polyclinic: open from December 1, 2026 to December 23, 2026, with the mini zoo open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Advent on Masaryk Square

On Masaryk Square, expect the feel of a big city Advent: the main stage, the lights and the tree the whole program revolves around.

A typical Advent day here has a clear rhythm. Afternoons belong to the stalls and families with kids; toward evening the lights come on and a concert starts on the main stage.

Music is the main draw here. Between concerts you’ll find children’s theater, cimbalom bands and swing bands.

If you’re coming with small children, aim for the afternoon, while you can still stand at the stalls in peace and the evening concerts haven’t started yet.

Prevention officers traditionally help keep the Ostrava Christmas markets safe.

If you want to skate, head over to Dr. Edvard Beneš Square, home of the Christmas ice rink. Feel free to pack your skates right in your backpack.

Tip from experience: cold drains your phone battery faster, so a power bank in your pocket pays off, especially if you want to play after the markets.

Gingerbread Christmas in the South

This year’s theme in Ostrava-Jih is Perníkové Vánoce (Gingerbread Christmas). The south offers a different Advent than downtown, split between a forest and a housing-estate square.

Illuminated installations are part of the southern Advent, and in Bělský les they look best after dark.

The Christmas Square by the Hrabůvka Polyclinic is more about crafts and traditions. Expect the Bethlehem Light, a straw mountain, a small bell tower, a wooden nativity scene, blacksmith demonstrations and lead pouring.

For food, there are roasted chestnuts and carp, and new this year are two curling lanes.

For families with younger kids, the south is the easiest choice: the mini zoo, the straw mountain and the wooden nativity scene can be explored without rushing and without the crowd at the stage.

The south is a fair trip from downtown. It’s worth giving it a separate afternoon, not just a quick stop.

Dolní Vítkovice in Winter

If you want to see Advent Ostrava from a different angle, head to Dolní Vítkovice after the markets.

The former ironworks site with its blast furnaces feels completely different in the winter dusk than the wooden stalls on the square. Steel, lights and frost give your photos a contrast you won’t get downtown.

It fits well with the markets. Downtown in the afternoon, Vítkovice after dark, and if you still have the energy, the evening lights in Bělský les.

The site works great as a meeting point for friends or colleagues, because the blast furnaces are visible from far away and nobody can miss them.

A Game Between the Stalls

You can turn your Advent stroll into a game: Treasure Hunt Ostrava is our city game where, instead of listening to commentary, you hunt for treasures around town.

You play in our GPS app on a phone or tablet. The map with the treasures is on screen, and treasures unlock once you get within roughly 10 to 40 meters of them, depending on the terrain.

The questions at the treasures relate to the spot where you’re standing. Whoever looks around has the edge.

Plan on the game keeping a team busy for 2 to 3 hours.

In a Treasure Hunt, neither the smarter nor the faster team wins. What decides it is how well the team agrees on a route and who keeps an eye on what.

The game pairs naturally with the Christmas markets. Daylight belongs to the city and the treasures, and once it gets dark, it’s time for mulled wine and the lit-up tree.

A Day the Ostrava Way

You can fit Ostrava’s Advent into one long day if you follow the order of the daylight.

Feel free to flip the order; just save the illuminated spots for after dark.

  • In the morning, start Treasure Hunt Ostrava downtown and explore the city by its treasures.
  • After the game, warm up at the stalls on Masaryk Square and leave time for the main stage.
  • In the afternoon, go skating on Dr. Edvard Beneš Square, or take the kids south to the mini zoo.
  • At dusk, move on to the blast furnaces of Dolní Vítkovice, where Advent gets an industrial backdrop.
  • Finish the evening at the Christmas Village in Bělský les among the illuminated installations.

Corporate Advent in Ostrava

Companies from Ostrava and the surrounding area can build a pre-Christmas afternoon the same way: first a city game, then an evening together.

Team-building games are made for this, because colleagues have to agree and solve tasks together.

A pre-Christmas event is a party, not a training session. That’s why the game doesn’t test anyone, and it gives people a reason to talk even with colleagues they only pass in the office.

You can connect the game to a venue you’ve already booked and head straight there once you finish.

We’ve been running Treasure Hunts since 2013, and Ostrava’s Advent downtown makes a rewarding backdrop for them.
