Bratislava Christmas Markets 2026: Dates, Hours and Squares
Bratislava's Christmas markets run from November 26, 2026 to January 3, 2027 across a chain of squares in the historic center. Here's what each square offers, plus opening hours and travel tips.
Bratislava’s Christmas markets run this year from November 26, 2026 to January 3, 2027, and the stalls are open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., except December 24 and 25. The heart of the markets is on Main Square and Hviezdoslav Square, while Primate’s Square and Franciscan Square offer quieter corners. From Brno, the train gets you there in an hour and a half. Advent on the Danube works as a quick day trip. If you’d rather explore downtown some other way than stall by stall, turn the walk into a game.
The Squares at a Glance
Bratislava’s Advent doesn’t stick to one square. Stalls and rest areas are spread across the historic center and each square has its own character, so it pays to know ahead of time where to go to eat and where to sit down.
The organizer releases the full program of concerts and side events for this year’s Advent gradually. Check exact performance times in the city’s events calendar before you travel. The layout of the squares doesn’t change from year to year; anything marked “usually” below is worth confirming with the organizer.

- Main Square: food, drinks, gifts and handmade crafts, nonprofit stalls, and the tree that lights up on Friday, November 27.
- Primate’s Square: a Christmas Forest of small trees decorated by schoolchildren, with the covered Friendly Zone for families and seniors right next to it, the quietest corner of the whole market.
- Hviezdoslav Square: usually a kids’ world with play features, a wooden nativity scene and a large Advent wreath.
- Franciscan Square: usually books by Slovak authors and readings at the end of the week.
- Old Town Hall courtyard: the link between Main Square and Primate’s Square, more intimate than its surroundings.
Food on Main Square
Main Square is the heart of the whole Advent season, and above all, it’s where people eat. The menu runs from kapustnica (cabbage soup) and langos to bao and gyoza, and vegans aren’t forgotten.
To drink, there’s mead, grog, fruit wine and beer, with non-alcoholic drinks for kids and drivers. Between the food stalls, vendors sell Christmas gifts, candles, ornaments and handmade crafts, and nonprofits have their place here too.
The organizer keeps an eye on waste, too. The markets have four recycling stations and a single returnable cup system, so a cup bought in one spot can be returned at another.
If you need a breather, walk through the Old Town Hall courtyard to the Friendly Zone on Primate’s Square. It’s covered and barrier-free, meant for families with children, seniors and anyone looking for some peace and quiet.
Christmas Forest by the Town Hall
Just walk through the Old Town Hall courtyard and the bustle of Main Square stays behind you. On Primate’s Square, a Christmas Forest grows from small trees decorated by kids from elementary, art and special education schools.
The forest lives on beyond the square, too. From December 15, the trees go to families and charities, so if you want to see it in full glory, don’t leave your visit until the end of Advent.
The Friendly Zone stands right next to the forest. You can combine both into one longer stop with a hot drink in hand.
Hviezdoslav Square for Kids
Hviezdoslav Square is one of the main market venues. At the grand opening, the lights on the Christmas trees switch on here, just like on Main Square, and Advent begins.
The space usually belongs to kids: a slide, a trail and plenty of play features, including small wooden houses. Adults stop at the wooden nativity scene or the giant Advent wreath, where electric candles light up one by one as Christmas approaches.
There are food and drink stalls here, too. For a family with small kids, it’s the natural place to start the day before heading to the busier Main Square. From November 27 the city also runs a family game, Škriatkovo kúzlo (Elf’s Magic), played on a phone along the windows downtown.
Quiet Franciscan Square
If you prefer books to punch, head to Franciscan Square. On Fridays and Saturdays there are usually readings from books by Slovak authors, and a nice edition makes a gift to put under the tree.
The Old Town Hall courtyard is also worth a stop. It’s far more intimate than the surrounding squares and a good place to wait out the busiest stretch at the food stalls.
Getting There
From Brno, Bratislava is a quick day trip: leave in the morning, stroll the squares in the afternoon, and in the evening catch both the lights and the ride home. Bratislava is also Brno’s sister city, so its Advent comes up in Brno every winter.
From Prague, the trip is much longer. It’s worth staying overnight and splitting up the walk: shopping and food in the morning, decorations and lights after dark.
All the market squares sit close together in the historic center, and you walk between them. Comfortable shoes and warm gloves matter more than a precise plan.
Treasure Hunt for Teams
For a company, a group of friends or a family, there’s Treasure Hunt Bratislava, one of our city games. Teams get tablets or phones with our GPS app and see all the treasures at once on the on-screen map.
In Treasure Hunt, the team picks the order of the treasures itself, so they have to agree on the route and who solves what. The treasures unlock only when the team gets close, roughly 10 to 40 meters depending on the terrain. Each of the treasures holds a question tied to the spot where the team is standing.
The game keeps a team busy for 2 to 3 hours, and the evening can wrap up at a kapustnica stall. There’s no cap on group size, and for a corporate event we bring the tablets and instructors. A family or a small group can start the game on their own phones.
Games are usually available in Czech and English versions, and players compete in one chosen language. Every booking comes with a guarantee: the program runs on the original date regardless of the weather, and if the weather turns bad, an indoor story game replaces the outdoor one.
Markets in Other Cities
If Advent on the Danube isn’t enough, we cover other cities in the same detail, each with a city game to pair with a day at the stalls:
- Vienna Christmas Markets: from Rathausplatz to Schönbrunn in a single day.
- Brno Christmas Markets: how the squares differ.
- Olomouc Christmas Markets: Upper and Lower Squares, the punch trail and the ice rink.
- Prague Christmas Markets: where they are, when they start and what not to miss.
- Mikulov Christmas Markets: the chateau and Holy Hill in winter.

You’ll enjoy Advent in Bratislava most when darkness catches you on the way between squares and the decorations light up around you. With younger kids, start on Hviezdoslav Square and walk over to the Christmas Forest in the afternoon. With colleagues or friends, head out for Treasure Hunt Bratislava first; you’ll return the tablets after the game and reach the stalls on Main Square warmed up and hungry. Pick a game date on the Treasure Hunt Bratislava page. If you’re planning a company trip, write to us with the date, how many of you are coming and which language you want to play in. We calculate the price based on the number of players, and during Advent it pays to get in touch early.
