Republic Square
In most Czech cities, the town square is also the city center, and Plzeň is no exception. However, what makes this square unique is its size: 139 × 193 meters. Only Charles Square in Prague covers a larger area. From both a Czech and European perspective, Republic Square is among the largest squares on the continent.
The most striking landmark of Plzeň’s center is undoubtedly St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, which towers above everything else. Travelers may also be interested in the Marian Column and the local Town Hall. Many visitors are impressed by the golden fountains, which may not have historical significance but attract attention with their unusual modern design.
St. Bartholomew´s Cathedral
St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral is the main attraction not only of Republic Square but of the entire city. This Gothic church began construction as early as the 13th century.
It boasts the tallest church tower in the Czech Republic, reaching 102.26 meters. Visitors can climb all the way to the top. Although the ascent is a bit demanding - 299 steps lead to the summit—the breathtaking view makes it worthwhile. This cathedral is considered one of the most important Gothic landmarks in the country, both inside and out. Inside, you’ll find the renowned Gothic sculpture of the Plzeň Madonna and a richly decorated pulpit.
The cathedral is open to visitors every weekday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and on holidays and weekends from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Entry is free, although small donations are naturally welcome.
Pilsner Urquell Brewery
When you hear “Plzeň,” beer should immediately come to mind. It’s brewed in the Pilsner Urquell Brewery, founded back in 1842. Unlike many competitors, Pilsner Urquell aimed to produce high-quality beer and hired Bavarian brewmaster Josef Groll. He went on to create the world’s first golden lager. Before that, most beers were dark. Thus, the brewery played a key role in defining today’s beer standard.
The brewery is still in operation today, and anyone interested can book a tour of the premises. For the price of admission, visitors can explore the rooms where beer history was made and learn all about the brewing process of the famous golden drink. Naturally, every tour includes a beer tasting
