Pilsen Christmas Markets 2026 on Republic Square
The Pilsen Christmas markets run on Republic Square from November 21 to December 23, 2026. Here's where to find the tree, the nativity scene, the Ferris wheel and more Advent stops around the city.
The Pilsen Christmas markets have the same address every year: náměstí Republiky (Republic Square). The Advent market runs from November 21 to December 23, 2026, and you can look forward to a big Christmas tree, a nativity scene with life-size wooden statues, live animals in a stable, a historic carousel and an illuminated Ferris wheel. The scent of mulled wine, old Czech trdlo and gingerbread cookies hangs over the stalls. If you want more than shopping, Pilsen has other Advent stops too, and you can explore downtown through a playful activity.
The Markets at a Glance
The key planning details in one place, so you know where and when to go.
- Location: Republic Square, the historic center of Pilsen.
- Dates: November 21 to December 23, 2026.
- Tree: the ceremonial lighting takes place on the first Sunday of Advent.
- Program: demonstrations of folk traditions and crafts, plus performances on stage.
- Beyond the square: Slovany, Borská přehrada (Bory Reservoir), the town hall’s mázhauz (entrance hall) and the farmstead in Bolevec.
When to Visit the Markets
The stalls on Republic Square stay open until December 23. That leaves plenty of time for last-minute gifts.
The square comes alive from late morning until evening, and every afternoon belongs to the cultural program. The organizers publish exact times and the performance schedule in the market calendar, which we recommend checking before your trip.
The brightest evening of the whole Advent season is usually the tree lighting. Pilsen holds it on the first Sunday of Advent, which this year falls on Sunday, November 29; according to Visit Plzeň it starts at 6 p.m. with a supporting program.
For a calmer stroll, go on a weekday morning. On weekends and after dark, the square tends to be packed and lines form at the drink stalls, so plan for that, especially if you’re visiting with small children.
What You’ll Find on the Square
The selection is wide: Christmas goods, gifts, handmade crafts and traditional food and drinks.
The folk craft demonstrations stick to the Christmas theme. They’re worth a longer stop than the mulled wine stand, because this is where you’ll see how quality handmade products come to life.
For a walk around the square, a proven order works well: the nativity scene, the animal stable, the historic carousel and finally the Ferris wheel. The big tree makes a great landmark and meeting point for anyone who gets lost in the crowd.
St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral forms the backdrop for the stalls. Every photo from the markets gets a Gothic tower in the background, without you having to hunt for the right angle.
Two Christmas Trees
The main tree stands right at the markets and is their heart. Only the city’s official figures will confirm whether this year’s tree is bigger than previous ones; we won’t guess.
But Pilsen has a second tree that’s worth a short detour: a floating Christmas tree on the surface of the Bory Reservoir.
It lights up in the early evening. Check the lighting date in the city events calendar. If you want to catch both spots in one day, start at the reservoir and finish the evening on the square.
The Slovany Markets
The Slovany district offers a smaller, neighborly atmosphere. The space in front of the Pilsen 2 District Office turns into a Christmas market for three days.
The markets culminate with the lighting of the Christmas tree. The popular Slovany angel is there, along with singing by children from local kindergartens and elementary schools.
The dates of the Slovany markets shift from year to year with the calendar, so we recommend following them on the district’s website.
Advent Beyond the Square
In the mázhauz of Pilsen Town Hall, a Christmas mailman is on duty during Advent. The post office has a special Christmas stamp, perfect for holiday greetings and for letters addressed straight to Ježíšek (Baby Jesus). Kids can drop them in the mailman’s Christmas mailbox.
The U Matoušů farmstead in Bolevec, Pilsen, opens a Christmas exhibition in its farmhouse on Advent weekends. A guided tour reveals who, besides Mikuláš (St. Nicholas), made the rounds of the village during Advent.
If you need a bit of exercise after the mulled wine, there’s an outdoor skating rink at the Škoda sport park.
Downtown as a Game
Our Treasure Hunt Pilsen game guides you through downtown before you head to the stalls. You play on tablets or phones with our GPS app and see the treasures right on the map on your screen.
Treasures unlock once your team gets within roughly 10 to 40 meters, depending on the terrain. In Treasure Hunt, you choose the order of the treasures yourselves, so the strategy is entirely up to you.
The number of treasures isn’t the point here. Each game keeps a team busy for 2 to 3 hours, and afterward you can move straight on to the stalls.
For companies, that makes a great Christmas program for one afternoon: Treasure Hunt Pilsen outdoors and the markets in the evening. The game has no capacity limit, so it works for a small team as well as a company-wide corporate event. Team-building geolocation games for companies are team activities where colleagues have to communicate and solve tasks together.
We’ve been running Treasure Hunts since 2013. Peace of mind comes with every booking: if the December weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ll launch a story game in indoor mode instead of Treasure Hunt. Questions appear on the screen one after another while your team sits together somewhere warm. You can easily connect the game to a venue you book in advance.
