Budapest Christmas Markets and Thermal Baths in One Trip

Budapest Christmas Markets and Thermal Baths in One Trip

Budapest's Christmas markets on Vörösmarty tér and by St. Stephen's Basilica pair perfectly with an evening in the thermal baths. Here's the full weekend plan.

Budapest’s Christmas markets are concentrated in the historic center on the Pest bank of the Danube: the main stalls stand on Vörösmarty tér (Vörösmarty Square) and in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica, a short walk apart. You can pair an evening at the markets with the thermal baths, where you swim outdoors in warm water even in December. Below is the full plan for the weekend.

Advent at a Glance

Before you start planning, here’s the whole trip boiled down to a few points.

  • Main markets: Vörösmarty tér and the square in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica, both on the Pest side.
  • Best time: late afternoon and evening, when the stalls, bridges and embankment light up.
  • Baths: the outdoor pools of the Széchenyi Baths in City Park or the Turkish dome of the Rudas Baths on the Buda bank.
  • Dates and opening hours: always go by the city’s official events calendar and the individual baths’ websites.
  • Free afternoon: Treasure Hunt Budapest, a game around downtown played on a tablet or phone.

Where the Markets Are

The heart of Advent Budapest lies on the Pest bank, within walking distance of the Danube. Budapest is one of the slightly more distant markets, but still a beautiful one, so coming from the Czech Republic it’s worth staying at least one night.

Vörösmarty tér is the classic. Wooden stalls surround the square at the start of pedestrian Váci Street, selling ceramics, leather goods, hand-painted ornaments and food from huge pans that send steam drifting across the whole square.

The square in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica has a different character. The basilica’s dome rises right above the stalls, and the middle of the square usually hosts an ice rink where kids and adults circle in the evening.

Zrínyi Street leads from the basilica to the Danube. At its end, the view opens onto the Chain Bridge and Buda Castle, and this is exactly where you’ll want to stop once it’s dark.

When to Go

Head to the markets at dusk. The stalls are open during the day too, but the decorations, the embankment and the bridges over the river only light up after dark.

The city publishes this year’s program, dates and opening hours in its events calendar; check them before you travel, since they shift from year to year. The typical weekend rhythm doesn’t change, though: mornings are calm and roomy at the stalls, crowds build in the afternoon and live music plays on the stages in the evening.

Around Christmas Eve, some stalls and services close earlier. If you’re planning a trip at the very end of Advent, expect shorter hours and book the baths in advance.

Families with young kids will appreciate a weekday afternoon. The crowds are smaller and the ice rink by the basilica is less busy.

Baths After the Markets

The thermal baths are the reason Budapest works differently in December than other Advent cities. After an evening out in the frost, warm water under the open sky is a contrast you won’t forget.

The Széchenyi Baths in City Park have large outdoor pools framed by yellow neo-Baroque buildings. In winter, thick steam rises off the water, and locals play chess on stone boards right in the pool.

The Rudas Baths on the Buda bank by the Elisabeth Bridge offer the opposite mood: dim light under a Turkish dome, and up on the roof a pool with a view of the Danube and the Pest embankment.

Check opening hours, admission and the rules for evening bathing directly on the baths’ website. Bring a swimsuit, a towel and flip-flops so you’re not walking barefoot on the stone floors.

The Weekend Step by Step

On day one, check in after you arrive, rest briefly and walk to Vörösmarty tér in the evening. From there, cross over to the basilica, grab a mulled wine and follow Zrínyi Street down to the Danube.

Start day two at the baths in the morning, before the pools fill up. The afternoon belongs to the game around downtown. Toward evening, head back to the markets, this time taking in the lit-up Buda Castle from the embankment.

If you’re staying longer, add a climb up Castle Hill and Fisherman’s Bastion. From there, the whole Pest bank with the Parliament is laid out in front of you, best just after sunset.

Getting There and Around

Direct trains run to Budapest from both Prague and Brno, so you can travel without changing trains and without worrying about parking downtown.

The best way to get around the city is on foot and by streetcar. The streetcar along the Pest embankment is a sightseeing ride in itself, especially after dark, when the bridges and the castle on the opposite bank are lit up.

Everything between the two markets and the Danube is within walking distance. You’ll mostly need public transit to get to City Park and the Széchenyi Baths.

Downtown as a Game

Between the baths and the evening markets, you’ll have a free afternoon. Treasure Hunt Budapest turns it into an expedition: on a tablet or phone with our GPS app, you see a map with treasures scattered around downtown.

In Treasure Hunt, all the treasures are visible on the map at once, and you choose the order yourself. When you reach one of the treasures, a question opens up tied to the spot where you’re standing, so you read the city straight from the street, not from a guidebook.

The game keeps a team busy for 2 to 3 hours. It fits comfortably between lunch and dusk, when the markets light up.

Families with kids, groups of friends and colleagues on an Advent trip all play. We’ve been running Treasure Hunts since 2013, and they follow one simple rule: neither the smartest nor the fastest team wins. What decides it is how well the team agrees on the route.

What to Taste

You can recognize Advent Budapest by its smell, too. At the markets, it’s worth trying:

  • lángos, a fried flatbread with sour cream and grated cheese
  • kürtőskalács, a spit cake baked over glowing coals and coated in sugar and nuts
  • töltött káposzta, stuffed cabbage cooked in big pots
  • forralt bor, Hungarian mulled wine, and hot chocolate for the kids
