Kutná Hora Christmas Markets 2026: St. Barbara’s and a Silver Christmas

Kutná Hora's Christmas markets on Palacký Square open at 11:00 with music from 15:00. Here's how to pair them with St. Barbara's, Hrádek, Sedlec and a game around town.

Kutná Hora holds its Christmas markets on Palacký Square (Palackého náměstí), in the heart of the historic center. The stalls open at 11:00, and live music starts at 15:00. The 2026 Advent markets in Kutná Hora will offer handmade crafts, craft workshops for kids and a historic carousel. There’s room for much more around the markets: a walk to St. Barbara’s Church, a stop in Sedlec and the town’s silver history, which you can explore phone in hand as a hunt for treasures.

The Advent Program at a Glance

Advent in Kutná Hora isn’t confined to a single square. The markets are the core of the day, surrounded by exhibitions, churches and landmarks that make the trip worth it even without mulled wine.

Here’s how to plan a winter day in town if you want to see the essentials without running back and forth:

  • Palacký Square: stalls, crafts, music and mulled wine, the town’s main Advent hub.
  • Vlašský dvůr (Italian Court): the former royal mint, where Kutná Hora’s silver story begins.
  • Hrádek and Barborská Street: the route to the church past the silver museum and the Jesuit College.
  • St. Barbara’s Church: the Gothic highlight of any walk through town.
  • Sedlec: the ossuary and cathedral on the edge of town, a short distance from the main train station.
Kutná Hora: 45 treasures in a downtown listed by UNESCO.

The Markets on Palacký Square

The main Advent market sits on Palacký Square, and its rhythm is simple. Mornings are for shopping, afternoons for music.

Among the stalls you’ll find handmade crafts, traditional craft demonstrations, creative workshops for kids and a historic carousel. Families with younger children can easily spend the whole morning here.

To warm up, food stalls serve sausages, cheese, hot mulled wine and mead. Take your mug along for a walk; the center is compact, and everything that matters is within walking distance.

You can walk around the square in no time. That’s why it pays to come back: in the morning for gifts, after dark for the lights and music. The town announces the exact market days on its website, so check them before you travel.

Advent in Town

What to expect from Advent in Kutná Hora shows in how it has looked so far. The Advent program filled the town from late November into early January.

In the courtyard of Sankturinovský House stood a Christmas tree with a magic bell, and whoever rang it called Baby Jesus. For kids, it was the shortest route to Baby Jesus in the whole center.

The Church of St. John of Nepomuk hosted the Christmas exhibition Zimní čas (Winter Time) until January 31, 2026. So Advent here doesn’t end on Christmas Eve; the exhibitions run past New Year’s Eve.

Photographers got their share too. The new decorations delighted photo lovers, and in the winter fog over the Vrchlice valley the old town looks even better.

A Silver Christmas at Hrádek

Kutná Hora owes its fame to silver, and during Advent this story is closest at Hrádek on Barborská Street. Legend says a monk discovered silver here and marked the spot with his kutna (habit), which supposedly gave the town its name.

Today Hrádek belongs to the Czech Museum of Silver. Last year, here at Barborská 28, a Christmas exhibition explored the origins and symbolism of holiday dishes, from fried carp with potato salad to mushroom kuba and Christmas cookies.

From Hrádek, Barborská Street leads to St. Barbara’s along the Jesuit College, with statues of saints lining the balustrade. In December it’s the most photogenic stretch in town, especially when fog hangs over the valley.

The second silver stop is Vlašský dvůr, the former royal mint where Prague groschen were struck. It’s just a short walk from Palacký Square, so you can combine it with the markets without driving.

St. Barbara’s and Sedlec

St. Barbara’s Church stands at the end of Barborská Street above the Vrchlice valley. Against the low December sun, its flying buttresses look almost like lace.

St. Barbara is the patron saint of miners. That’s why the church makes sense right here: it was built by a town that grew rich on the mines beneath its own streets.

Sedlec lies on the edge of town by the main train station. You can see the ossuary and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady right after arriving by train, before heading downtown.

Sedlec often has its own Advent too. The Sedlec Advent fair took place on Saturday, November 22, 2025. Opening hours for the landmarks differ in winter from summer, so check them before you go.

Through Town with a Treasure Map

The Treasure Hunt Kutná Hora game runs between the markets and the landmarks. On a phone or tablet with our GPS app, you see a map with all the treasures and choose the order in which you visit them.

Treasures unlock when you get within roughly 10 to 40 meters, depending on the terrain and the type of game. Then you answer a question tied directly to the spot where you’re standing.

The game takes 2 to 3 hours, which fits a winter afternoon just right. The number of treasures isn’t what matters most here: more treasures mainly mean more room for strategy.

The game is played outdoors. In December, bring an extra sweater and a charged phone; the cold drains batteries faster than you’d like.

Splitting Advent between two cities? You’ll find the same concept in Treasure Hunt Prague. Prague in the morning, a train to Kutná Hora after lunch and the market lights in the evening.

Getting There from Prague

Trains from Prague run to Kutná Hora hlavní nádraží (main station), which is in Sedlec. To reach the center, take a local train to the Kutná Hora město stop, or walk through Sedlec and stop at the ossuary on the way.

If you’re driving, park outside the narrowest part of the historic core. You’ll explore the center on foot anyway, and the lanes around Palacký Square weren’t built for cars.

Take warm boots seriously. The town is hilly, the cobblestones get slippery in December, and you’ll walk more between St. Barbara’s and the square than you expect.
