Prague Christmas Markets 2026: Where They Are and What Not to Miss

Where to find Prague's Christmas markets in 2026, which one opens first, what to taste and buy, and how to enjoy Advent downtown without the crowds.

Prague’s biggest Christmas market sets up on Old Town Square, but the market on Náměstí Míru (Peace Square) is usually the first to open. The season traditionally runs from late November to early January. Markets also go up on Wenceslas Square and Republic Square, and in 2026 they’ll again offer stalls with traditional crafts and food plus a themed cultural program. Here’s where to find them, what to taste and how to get through Advent downtown without the crush.

The Markets at a Glance

Prague’s main Christmas markets sit on downtown squares only a few minutes’ walk or one metro stop apart.

Our overview below compares what each market offers and where to get off the metro, so you can plan your Advent without wandering around.

  • Old Town Square: the largest Christmas market in Prague, a stage with performers from across the Czech Republic and a Christmas tree as the market’s centerpiece. Metro Staroměstská (line A).
  • Wenceslas Square: stalls and a lit Christmas tree, closest to Můstek. Metro Můstek (lines A and B).
  • Náměstí Míru: the market that usually opens first, with the Church of St. Ludmila in the background. Metro Náměstí Míru (line A).
  • Republic Square: a market between the Municipal House and the Powder Tower, where Celetná Street leads to Old Town Square. Metro Náměstí Republiky (line B).

When the Markets Open

Prague’s Christmas markets traditionally run from late November to early January. The organizers and the city’s tourism portal publish the exact dates for this year’s Advent as the season approaches, so check them before you travel.

If you want the first mulled wine of the season, head to Vinohrady: the market there usually opens earlier than the others.

The big markets in the historic center start together, since the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square markets run at the same time. Treat individual stall hours as a guide and leave some slack for the evening program.

Old Town Square

Old Town Square is the heart of Prague’s Advent. Stalls surround the Christmas tree, and above them rise the towers of Týn Church and the Old Town Hall with its astronomical clock.

The market here puts the focus on Czech ingredients and products, and traditional crafts are well represented too, so at many stalls you can watch the goods being made.

On the stage right on the square, Advent brings a rotating lineup of children’s ensembles, well-known and lesser-known bands, folk ensembles and choirs. The best view of the tree and the stage is from the Jan Hus Memorial, where you can step out of the flow of people for a moment.

Wenceslas Square

The Wenceslas Square market stands at the lower end of the square, a short way from Můstek, and it’s the most convenient first stop for anyone arriving by metro.

From here, a short walk along Na Můstku and Melantrichova streets takes you straight to Old Town Square. You can do both markets in one evening without a single ride on public transit.

When you need a breather, continue up the boulevard to the St. Wenceslas statue and the National Museum, where the crowd thins out.

Náměstí Míru and Republic Square

On Náměstí Míru, the neo-Gothic Church of St. Ludmila serves as the market’s backdrop. It’s a good choice when you want a market right by a metro station and away from the main tourist flow of the Old Town.

Republic Square is one of Prague’s busiest markets. The stalls here have the Art Nouveau Municipal House and the Gothic Powder Tower at their backs.

Walk through the Powder Tower and on down Celetná Street, and you’ll reach Old Town Square in a few minutes. It’s the prettiest approach to the big market, especially after dark.

What to Taste and Buy

For savory and sweet, the stalls on Old Town Square offer sausages made from Czech meat, classic Czech trdelník and Christmas cookies from local producers. More adventurous foodies can go for oysters and snails.

Gifts here are mostly traditional: ornaments in various materials, candles and wreaths, plus nativity scenes and mistletoe.

Eat before the square fills up after dark, and bring a cloth bag for shopping. Have fragile glass ornaments wrapped in paper; they break easily on the metro.

Advent Without the Crowds

You’ll have the most room at the stalls on weekday mornings. On weekend evenings, people stand shoulder to shoulder around the tree on Old Town Square.

Reversing the order helps too: start at the smaller market on Náměstí Míru and move downtown later.

When the crush stops being fun, swap part of the evening for a walk. At Prague Castle, the courtyards and Golden Lane are worth a stop, with the best view of the snowy roofs of Malá Strana.

Vyšehrad is even quieter: ramparts above the Vltava, a view of the river and Vyšehrad Cemetery with the Slavín.

A Game Between Markets

Between the afternoon and evening markets, there’s room for one more thing: a game. Treasure Hunt Prague is our city game, played on tablets or phones with our GPS app.

The on-screen map shows all the treasures at once and you choose the order yourself, so you can shape the route around where you want to finish. Treasures unlock once you’re within roughly 10 to 40 meters, depending on the terrain and the type of game.

The questions tie into the spot where you’re standing, so you’ll see the city more closely than on an ordinary walk. Each of our games keeps a team busy for 2 to 3 hours, so you start after lunch and reach the tree just as the lights come on.

It gets dark early in December, so it’s best to set out right after noon. For a quieter setting above the river, there’s Treasure Hunt Vyšehrad, which takes you around the Vyšehrad grounds.

Practical Tips

Take the metro downtown: Staroměstská, Můstek, Náměstí Míru and Náměstí Republiky are right by the markets. Parking downtown during Advent is difficult and slow.

Be ready to pay both ways, cash and card, so no stall catches you off guard.

Dress in layers. You’ll stand at the stalls for a long time, and the December cold creeps up from the cobblestones into your shoes faster than you’d expect.

Watch your wallet and phone in the crowd around the tree. Náměstí Míru is the easiest square with a stroller; the lanes around Old Town Square see heavy foot traffic during the season.

Thank you for organizing the Treasure Hunt in Mikulov. I have not a single complaint about the organization. The event was perfectly prepared and this type of game draws in even the less active participants.
