What Places Are Worth Visiting in Znojmo?
Znojmo is one of the gems of the South Moravian Region. Surrounded by stunning landscapes that include not only vineyards and meadows but also lush forests, the town offers a wealth of attractions. Nearby, Podyjí National Park captivates visitors with its pristine natural beauty, while Znojmo itself boasts a rich cultural heritage and diverse tourist offerings.
Rotunda of St. Catherine
If you are interested in Romanesque architecture, you should definitely not miss the Rotunda of St. Catherine. This building is one of the best preserved and most famous Romanesque buildings in the country.
Visitors can explore the rotunda not only from the outside, but also from the inside. The interior is decorated with murals depicting mainly Přemyslid princes. The Rotunda of St. Catherine is part of Znojmo Castle.
Znojmo Castle
Znojmo Castle is one of the biggest landmarks of the town. The original purpose of this monument was to protect the southwestern border of Moravia. Today, the castle no longer has its original appearance, as it has been rebuilt in the form of a Baroque castle. And because this former fortress is perched on a hill, it offers a very good view of the surrounding area.
There is free access to the castle walls. Anyone who enjoys landscape photography should not miss a visit to Znojmo Castle, even if they are not otherwise interested in sightseeing.
Znojmo Underground
From the castle on the hill, visitors to Znojmo can go straight to the local underground. The local catacombs are made up of a dense network of passages and cellars.
A large part of the underground was built in the 14th century. At that time, the catacombs were mainly used for defensive purposes. From underground, the defenders could inflict great damage on raiders without being seen.
In ancient times, the tunnels also included various traps, the purpose of which was to stop would-be attackers from advancing further into the tunnels.
As the catacombs are rather opaque, entry is only allowed when accompanied by a guide.
Town Hall Tower
In addition to Znojmo Castle, we also recommend visiting the Town Hall Tower. This Gothic building dates back to the 15th century and is 80 m high. It can be found in the historical centre, where it is definitely not to be missed.
The tower offers a beautiful view of the town and the nearby vineyards. In the Middle Ages, the town hall tower was supposed to symbolise the wealth and importance of the town.
St. Nicholas Church
If there is one monument in Znojmo that is really well-known, it is undoubtedly the Church of St. Nicholas. It often appears on commemorative postcards.
The church was built in the 14th century and is interesting for its architecture and interior decoration. The most striking features are the Renaissance altar and the pulpit, which is unique in its globe shape.
