History of the Villages

Zaječí and Přítluky have lived off wine for as long as anyone remembers. The vineyards here aren’t a backdrop for tourists but a livelihood, and the cellars behind the houses show it at first glance.

Great noble families also shaped the land around them. The Liechtensteins resided in Lednice and Valtice and spent centuries creating parks, ponds and small structures across the landscape. Mikulov belonged to the Dietrichsteins.

The biggest change came in the socialist era, when the Nové Mlýny reservoirs were built on the Dyje. The water flooded the floodplain forests, and the village of Mušov disappeared beneath the surface; all that’s left is its church on a small island in the middle of the reservoir.

Today the water belongs to the local landscape as naturally as the vineyards. From Maják you can see both at once.
